Although many reading specialists would probably argue that reading is still the most important skill students need to develop, the need to integrate technology into the school curriculum has led numerous organizations like the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to add standards emphasizing the need for teachers to prepare students to learn with technology. Prensky (2013) contends that today technology is so important that it has replaced reading as the number one skill students need to learn in school to succeed in the 21st century. The increased exposure to technology has changed the way students respond to instruction and has led to a new need for teachers to integrate digital resources in the curriculum. The technological tools they are exposed to include the Internet, cell phones, iPods, iPads, Facebook, and Twitter, and more of these resources will soon emerge. Today's students live in a world that has been transformed by technology, and they are often referred to as "digital natives" because their exposure to electronic resources begins at birth. Resources are included to help instructors implement digital storytelling projects, and the article discusses how to overcome common obstacles when using this teaching strategy.
